On November 7th, Santa Cruz County Superintendent Dr. Faris Sabbah joined a coalition of local education and government officials who released a letter affirming steadfast support for Santa Cruz County’s immigrant communities.
The Santa Cruz County Office of Education stands firm in its belief that our schools are safe spaces for every student, regardless of their background, identity, or immigration status. We understand that rhetoric around this election may have caused anxiety and concern among our families, and immigrant families in particular.
Regardless of immigration status, race, or gender identity, every child has a right to receive a free public education without discrimination, reprisal, or fear.
Santa Cruz County schools are prepared to assert and defend the rights of students and families, drawing on extensive legal and policy protections at the state, county and district levels. These protections include ensuring that no student’s access to education is impacted due to immigration status, and prevent schools from collecting or sharing immigration status under almost all circumstances. The Santa Cruz COE is also continuing to work with school districts and partners to ensure schools are spaces of safety and belonging for LGBTQ+ students.
Please read our letter for more details on these protections and our shared commitment to upholding the values of Santa Cruz County’s school community.
