The Safe School Project of Santa Cruz County, to better support our LGBTIQ & Ally youth within each school district, created a support mechanism titled Community Action Teams. Each Team is unique to each district and is in place to ether serve as a response to a crisis or to work proactively to better support LGBTIQ & Ally youth.
The volunteer members of the Community Action Teams will be crucial to helping students in our schools be safe and work in an environment that is conducive to learning and a positive image about themselves.

Job Description of the Community Action Team Member
Term Length: 2 years / voluntary position
Time Commitment: Variable
We are looking for 10 to 15 (per school district) key members/stake holders in the community who are committed to helping LGBT students, parents and staff within the school district in which they live.
The position would be similar to a Grand Jury Member. You would be drawn from a pool of members for a particular crisis (intervention) as a response team or to pro-actively support LGBT issues in your school district community when the need arises. As a team member you may be “on call” to:
- Come to a school site meeting(s) or school board(s) meeting to protect LGBT students, parents or staff. You would be part of an “intervention” team on behalf of these people.
- You may be asked to act as the liaison between school site and student, parent or staff member. You may be asked to follow up (check in) with these people after an event has been officially resolved.
- Be willing to speak at site or school board meetings, write/sign a letter in support of an issue, make some calls or talk with the media in support of LGBT students, parents or staff. You would be acting as a “community voice” in all of the above.
- You might be asked to take notes at a site or school board meetings. And report back to a larger task force.
- We are looking for people who are willing to take a pro-active approach to LGBT issues in their district as well. Ron Indra, as the Safe School Project coordinator, would coordinate all pro-active efforts with these teams.
- We are looking for business leaders, civic leaders, LGBT & Ally Community Members, Alumni, religious leaders, parents/guardians with students enrolled in the school district, experience parents/guardians who have had student enrolled in that district, elected officials and government officials, and former educators or school board members.
