4. Pride Letter from The Diversity Center Board President

Dear LGBT Community and Friends,

I want to wish everyone a very happy Pride weekend! And, in light of the weather for tomorrow, I want to make sure you are aware that our historic Santa Cruz Pride Festival will move from its usual location at San Lorenzo Park, to the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, at 307 Church Street in Downtown Santa Cruz. The Festival runs from 12 noon - 5 pm, and features DJ dance parties, food and merchandise booths, a beer and wine cantina, a resource and information fair, Cheer SF, spoken word artists and dance performances, and features musical performances by many local artists as well as KelseyB, Kissing Cousins, and Lucas Silveira of the Cliks.

The location of the Parade will not change, rain or shine. The Parade will take place as previously planned, on Pacific Avenue in Downtown Santa Cruz, from 11 am – 12 pm.

The origins of Pride parades and celebrations are in its powerful and important political statement, that through incredible persecution and enduring horrible injustices, we as LGBTQ people come together each June to march in solidarity against all odds and discrimination, to claim our rightful place at the table of full inclusion.

I treasure this intention to annually recommit ourselves to LGBTQ visibility and towards social justice. I also treasure that in many ways in recent years, Pride parades and celebrations have turned into amazing annual parties. This serves an important purpose as well, celebrations that demonstrate the strides we have made in equality, and the desire for us as a community to come together and celebrate our accomplishments and uniqueness as LGBTQ. For these reasons, our Santa Cruz Pride Parade goes marching on, as planned! Our LGBTQ trailblazers deserve no less. I look forward to strapping on some rain boots and an umbrella and tolerating a little rain in their honor!

I certainly understand if the rain prevents you from coming to the Parade this year, and know the decision will be a tough one for many. But I have hope that you will consider joining us for the Parade—whether you planned to march or to cheer us on from the sidelines. Wouldn’t it be amazing if, in Monday's Sentinel, it reads that “Regardless of the rain, they came and marched and cheered in the streets, in honor of the LGBTQ trailblazers who were rioted against at Stonewall, and who set in motion an annual political movement that cannot be stopped… And then after the Parade, they all ducked under the cover of the Civic Center Auditorium and partied all afternoon in Santa Cruz Pride style!...”?

I want to sincerely thank all those who are volunteering, and those who are helping us shift from San Lorenzo Park to the Civic Auditorium. I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow. Happy Pride! Adam
