Queer and Trans Youth Council FAQ

What does the Queer and Trans Youth Youth Council (QTYC) do?

  • Reaffirm or edit the mission statement.
  • Serve as an advisory committee to the Queer Youth Task Force (QYTF).
  • Establish goals and objectives for the year.
  • Organize events, programs, or campaigns for LGBTQIA+ and ally youth to complete within the academic year.

What exactly does being a member entail?

  • Commitment of attending regular meetings as a voting member and decision making advisor.
  • If a member chooses to be on a sub-committee or part of the leadership team, additional hours/meetings may be required.
  • Sub-committees can include planning of queer youth events, summits, conferences, campaigns, or safe school initiatives such as LGBT curriculum, trainings for teachers or organizing a school assembly. They can also plan community efforts and initiatives for sports, houses of worship, and other social communities.

What is the time commitment?

  • 8-10 hours per month

What are we doing during those hours?

  • We will spend 4-6 hours per month meeting together as the QTYC and with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education Alliance for Youth Action.
  • Councilmembers will spend 4-6 hours per month meeting with their subcommittee and/or working independently on projects that the QTYC have chosen to pursue.

Do I have an option to partake in meetings via Zoom/Skype/FaceTime rather than in person?

  • Yes. The Queer and Trans Youth Council will follow all CDC guidelines and local health ordinances in determining whether to meet in person or virtually. If there is an opportunity to meet in person, students may still choose to join the meeting virtually.

How are meeting days and times selected?

  • As a new team for QTYC is established each academic year, a first meeting is scheduled to establish general approval of meeting location, how often the council wants to meet (monthly, every 6 weeks, or quarterly), and days and times.
  • For sub-committees, additional meetings will be determined within the sub-committees.
