What does the Queer and Trans Youth Youth Council (QTYC) do?
- Reaffirm or edit the mission statement.
- Serve as an advisory committee to the Queer Youth Task Force (QYTF).
- Collaborate with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education Youth Led Leadership Alliance
- Establish goals and objectives for the year.
- Organize events, programs, or campaigns for LGBTQIA2S+ and allied youth to complete within the academic year.
What exactly does being a member entail?
- Commitment of attending regular meetings as a voting member and decision making advisor.
- Commitment to attend Youth Led Leadership Alliance meetings one Saturday a month.
- If a member chooses to be on a sub-committee or part of the leadership team, additional hours/meetings may be required.
- Sub-committees can include planning of queer youth events, summits, conferences, campaigns, or safe school initiatives such as LGBTQIA2S+ curriculum, trainings for teachers or organizing a school assembly. They can also plan community efforts and initiatives for sports, houses of worship, and other social communities.
What qualities are you looking for in a council member?
- Self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and in teams
- Passion for creating positive change
- Ability to keep time commitments and respond to texts and emails promptly
- Experience in leadership roles
- A desire to grow as a leader
- A school-year-long commitment to the council
What is the time commitment?
- 2-4 hours per week (8-16 hours per month) depending on the timelines for meetings, projects, and deadlines to be determined by the council members.
- Members will also meet in person with the Youth Led Leadership Alliance one Saturday a month for 2-4 hours.
What are we doing during those hours?
- We will spend 4-6 hours per month meeting together as the QTYC and 2-4 hours per month meeting with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education Youth Led Leadership Alliance.
- Councilmembers will spend 4-8 hours per month meeting with their subcommittee and/or working independently on projects that the QTYC have chosen to pursue.
Do I have an option to partake in meetings via Zoom/Skype/FaceTime rather than in person?
- Yes. The Queer and Trans Youth Council plans to begin the year meeting virtually via Zoom and will follow all CDC guidelines and local health ordinances in determining whether to meet in person or virtually. If there is an opportunity to meet in person, students may still choose to join the meeting virtually.
- The Youth Led Leadership Alliance meetings are currently scheduled to take place in-person. The County Office of Education will also follow all CDC guidelines and local health ordinances in determining whether or not to continue to meet in person.
How are meeting days and times selected?
- Weekly meetings for the QTYC have tentatively been scheduled to take place every other Tuesday from 4:15-5:45 pm via Zoom, but may be changed based on councilmember availability.
- Monthly meetings for the Youth Lead Leadership Alliance have been scheduled by the County Office of Education. Meetings will take place one Saturday a month.
- For sub-committees, additional meetings will be determined within the sub-committees.
