Pajaro Valley Pride “Empowering our Future Picnic Fundraiser”
Jul 29 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Come join Pajaro Valley Pride for an outdoor picnic fundraiser hosted by Councilman Jimmy Dutra and Assemblywoman Anna Caballero. During this event, we’ll be announcing the recipient of our 2017 scholarship, which will be receiving a $1,000 scholarship on August 20 during our Pajaro Valley Pride Festival at the Historic Downtown Plaza in Watsonville.

The theme of this picnic fundraiser is an extension of our theme for our Pride Festival, which is “We Stand Together, We March Together,” which focuses on youth. The idea behind this picnic’s theme is to raise awareness of why it’s important to create opportunities for our local queer youth. Through this scholarship not only are we encouraging our youth to develop into strong leaders through higher education, but also creating a supportive community that lets them know their future matters. By empowering our future, our youth, we are fostering leadership that embraces concepts of unity, equality, and justice, which strengthens communities and helps erode oppressive political legislation that aims to divide us.

Black Butterflies – A Collaborative Youth Arts Project @ Strand Theater
Jul 30 @ 2:00 am – 2:00 am

When you’re a young girl of color caught in the stifling web of educational neglect, calcified courts, and an overwhelmed incarceration system, it’s easy to become a statistic. Pushed out of society, Aisha, Mercedes, and Dani fiercely fight to survive the “school and prison nexus,” with their humanity, dignity, and individuality intact. Through the varied stories of these resilient girls, Black Butterflies explores how a broken system of schools, families, and courts can collude to trap girls of color.

This world premiere by award-winning and nationally-recognized playwright Darren Canady combines a cast of young actors from the A.C.T. Education & Community Program, Destiny Arts Center in Oakland, and the Young Conservatory.

The Rueff at A.C.T.’s Strand Theater, San Francisco, CA, July 25–29 @ 7 pm

Film Screening: F Word (family-friendly event) @ Museum of Art & History
Aug 6 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

The MAH will be hosting filmmaker, Nicole Opper for a screening of the docu-comedy series, The F Word. This series chronicles the journey of Nicole and Kristan, an Oakland-based queer couple who want to adopt a kid. This short, comedic documentary series chronicles their journey into the foster care system to become fostadopt parents, bumbling through a bizarre and bureaucratic maze in order to learn everything they can about the troubled institution on which they are staking their dreams of parenthood.

After the film screening will be a Q&A discussion with Nicole Opper, followed by discussion break-out sessions facilitated with community partners and collaborators who made the Lost Childhoods exhibition possible. This is a family-friendly event and will be accompanied by the MAH’s Kid Happy Hour, which provides art activities available for youth for the duration of the event.
